Women and Steroids: a New Fad?

Women have recently become steroid users due to a variety of factors, many of which are similar to the reasons men find them appealing. First off, women tend to have a more difficult time building lean muscle mass in the same manner that men are accustomed to. The typical female’s genetic makeup is such that “bulking up” per se, a common occurrence among men who lift weights regularly, is rare in women. Despite the infrequency with which bulking up occurs, many women were once concerned it would result from merely working out with weights or machines at the gym. Instead, in recent times, women have been more eager to embrace and generally more accepting of the more muscular body shape that results from moderate steroid use when coupled with weight lifting. Depending on the dosage and type of substance, the use of steroids counteracts this proclivity and enables women to gain a shapelier toned figure while mirroring few of the muscle mass attributes of her male counterpart.

There are some side effects that have concerned individuals in the female community. Mainly the typical gender traits that we associate with either men or women are sometimes altered through steroid abuse. For example, some women may experience a fairly deepened voice and reduced breast size depending on the type and amount of steroids in use. This is due to increase levels of testosterone that flows through the bloodstream and produces more male body processes. On top of that, a number of the side effects appear to be irreversible and may cause medical complications. The issue of social stigma is also one that many women taking steroidsexperience. Firstly, gender roles in society are often rigid in varying degrees and the slow transformation of a woman into something more masculine purely for the sake of aesthetics is not often encountered by many communities. This can lead to difficulty coping with social interaction and the resultant occurrences of depression and anxiety. The individual may also confront resistance from friends, family and loved ones who quite rightly may point out the detrimental by products of steroid abuse. This can cause great strain among interpersonal relationships further adding to the isolation that can occur.

In addition, women using such substances may also witness increased instances of facial hair growth, body hair and menstrual cycle disruptions throughout a steroid regime. The great influx of body hair typically occurs in traditionally male growth patterns such as the forearms, chin, back and chest. Many women invest considerable time and effort in waxing procedures, laser removal systems and shaving device in order to counteract this phenomenon. Considered by some to be merely a fad, women and steroids is actually an increasing and sustained phenomenon driven as much by the market as the drugs’ ready availability and society’s emphasis on physical attractiveness. With the advent of women-specific gyms and the prominent rise of female bodybuilders, steroid use in women has skyrocketed in recent years with little to no sign of abating in the coming decade.
