Laser Hair Removal: is it for You?
Schools across the county offer Laser Certifications for current aestheticians to advance their careers or for those looking for a career change or starting a new career. Last year, millions of people went through the procedure. Despite the economic times, Laser hair removal continues to thrive.
So, what exactly is laser hair removal? It is a medical procedure that uses laser light to remove unwanted hair. This intense, pulsating beam of light works by passing a light beam through the skin. Hair growth originates in the hair follicle. When the light beam hits this hair follicle the intense heat destroys the follicle instantly. In most cases it will take several treatments to achieve a hair-free period.
Sounds pretty good doesn’t it? Imagine removing that unwanted hair for the rest of your life. One treatment isn’t going to get you there. However, it’s possible with enough treatments over a period of time you could eventually rid yourself of the hair altogether. It is more likely that you will instead slow the growth of the hair. Studies have shown that laser hair removal can reduce hair counts by 20 percent to 90 percent. Each person will respond differently to the hair removal and some can expect longer treatments. Generally expect 6-8 treatments with 6-8 weeks in between. Periodic maintenance treatments may also be required.
Still interested? Okay, so you’ve decided to go for it. What happens when you get to the treatment center – what does treatment look like? During the procedure you will be wearing goggles to protect your eyes. A doctor or trained nurse will use a hand-held instrument to perform the procedure. He/she will press the laser to your skin. Depending on the type of laser, a cooling device on the tip or a cool gel is used to protect the skin. When the laser is activated you will feel a stinging sensation. You may also notice the slight odor of singed hair since the procedure causes a slight charring of stubble.
The time involved will vary depending on the area of the body involved and how big the surface of that area is. After the procedures you may notice some slight redness and swelling, which should last only a few hours. No medications or bandages are necessary. Often times an anesthetic may be used during the procedure. The stinging may also remain for up to 48 hours following the treatment. Few people experience crusting. If this happens you need to keep the area moist with Vaseline.
After the treatment your activities may be limited. You will need to avoid exercise for 24 hours as perspiration can increase the irritation. Avoid exposure to sun and apply sunscreen whenever you are in the sun. This also includes avoiding tanning booths. Don’t pluck or wax hairs for three weeks following the treatment; do not pick at the affected areas. Don’t rub or scrub the area. You will simply need to repeat the treatment as necessary to reach the desired result. This treatment can be a great way to rid yourself of unwanted hair. Check with your insurance provider to see if your treatment may be covered.
