Ipl Laser Hair Removal Does It Work

Laser Therapy: How Does it Work & is it for You?

You may have seen advertisements for cosmetic laser therapy on the news, in the newspapers, or in magazines, and you may have wondered what it is, how it works, and whether it will work for you. These are complicated questions, but this brief guide will give you a good place to start.

What Is a Laser?

Most people get most of what they know about lasers from scifi television. Contrary to popular belief, a laser is not a super-destructive zapgun firing round bolts of energy. A laser is more like a flashlight. It's just that the light from a laser is both very intense and very focused. It is so intense and so focused that lasers can be used to do things like perform surgical incisions, but the energy can be used so precisely that it will do more than gently warm the skin, if desired, or perform any level of task in between.

There are many different types of lasers that are used for different functions. Common types of lasers are the Erbium laser, the CO2 laser, and the Nd:YAG laser, named after the material used to emit the laser energy, which determines the exact type of light the laser uses.

How Does Laser Therapy Work?

There is no single type of procedure performed by cosmetic lasers--there are literally hundreds depending on the type of laser used and the results desired by you. Some of the more common types of laser treatments include:

· Laser skin resurfacing--a laser is used to ablate (remove) the surface of your skin. Similar to microdermabrasion or chemical peels, laser skin resurfacing reveals younger and fresher skin cells below the surface and stimulates the production of collagen and elastin which help the skin maintain its youthful appearance.

· Fractional skin resurfacing--a laser burns microcolumns into the skin, stimulating collagen production at a deep level, and targeting pigment irregularities in the skin. Treats not only irregular pigmentation, but also acne scars.

· Laser hair removal--a laser is used to kill the follicles of unwanted hair in specific areas of the face or elsewhere. This results in permanent reduction of hair in treated areas by as much as 90 %.

If you have acne scars, fine wrinkles, dull skin, or unwanted hair, you may be a candidate for laser therapy.

Is It for Me?

Laser therapy is not right for everyone. Fortunately, there are a number of other options for most people who desire the results of laser therapy but are unable to undergo the treatment.

· The best laser skin resurfacing candidates do not scar easily, and have lighter, not too oily skin. If you are not a good candidate for laser skin resurfacing, perhaps you could try microdermabrasion or chemical peels.

· The best fractional skin resurfacing candidates want to treat acne or brown skin discolorations, such as freckles or age spots. For treating rosacea and spider veins, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) or BroadBand Light (BBL) treatment is recommended.

· Laser hair removal works best on dark hair. If your hair is light, you may seek out other hair removal techniques such as electrolysis.

Of course, the best way to learn whether you are a candidate for laser therapy is to consult with an experienced laser treatment professional.
