Laser Hair Removal Age
Laser Hair Removal Age
have you ever had laser hair removal?

I want get laser hair removal really bad but I have a lot of questions. Only answer these if you have had it done or if you know of someone who's had it done.

1. is it expensive?
2. does it hurt?
3. does the hair grow back?
4. if it does, does it grow back thicker?
5. is there a certain age you have to be to have it done?
6. is it a good or bad idea?

thank you!

Very nicely presented question there- too bad that yahoo answers is so full of complete idiots above like Jason W and "Smiling Inside" that it weakens good answers like mine and Bulldog's.
1. is it expensive?
Damn right it is. In fact, because I'm a male and have a larger area I wanted to treat I opted for the home Tria Laser at $800 vs the estimated $5000 for professional treatments. Indeed the Tria leaves a lot to be desired but it did work satisfactorily for me.
2. does it hurt?
Like a bi-atch. Now I assume Bulldog went to a professional place, I don't know, but generally a HUGE advantage of professional treatment is they will apply a numbing lotion which I can't recommend enough. Depending on your hair's density, darkness, and thickness you can feel no pain at all up to feeling like you were prodded with a white hot metal stick- the latter being my experience. You often hear the pain described as a "light thwap with a rubber band" but I can tell you that is the furthest from the description I would give. In fact, I had one densely thick region between my shoulder blades where the pain from the laser was nothing less than excrutiating and in fact it even left blisters despite every effort to shave the region close as possible. Over time however as the hair thinned out the treatments did become more bearable but never painless.
3. does the hair grow back?
This is a tricky one. Laser is not a one time thing- it only works on hairs in Anagen Phase (actively growing) and by definition, since some hairs will be in telogen you will definitely need multiple treatments. Also even some of the "correctly" treatd hair will grow back and may take 3 even 4 or possible indefinite treatments (i.e. the laser is ineffective). Indeed I have hair in regions which never grew back after only two treatments while other areas the hair keeps growing back albeit notably finer and less dense yet it's never permanently "removed".

4. if it does, does it grow back thicker?
Absolutely not!! Any hairs that grow back have grown back thinner and at worst maybe the same but never thicker. The laser damages the follicles so if hair grows back it will be thinner, but not all follicles seem to respond to the laser. In fact, one of the theories I have on why I don't have permanent elimination in some areas is that the hair has grown back too fine for the laser to absorb enough energy to disable the follicle. But this is acceptable in my book just fine!
5. is there a certain age you have to be to have it done?
A professional treatment won't be performed on a minor if the place is reputable. One thing to keep in mind is if you are finding more hair developing on your body as you get older I suggest waiting until it levels off before getting treatment because otherwise while you successfully treat the hairs you now have, you'd need more treatments to kill the hair that forms later which greatly increase both your expense and dissatisfaction.
6. is it a good or bad idea?
This is highly subjective but for me it was worth the expense and pain because I approached it as a "hair reduction" therapy rather than a "hair removal therapy". If you have realistic expectations that you most likely won't have skin like a baby's butt but rather a significant (80% or more) reduction then you will most likely agree it's a good idea- unless you have a low pain tolerance and don't complete all the necessary treatments.

I hope this helps and again I apologize for the complete idiots on Yahoo Answers like Jason W and Smiling Inside who are too anxious to open their pie-holes even when they don't know the answer to a question.
