Laser Hair Removal Sun Exposure

should you avoid sun exposure during electrolysis?

Laser hair removal requires that you avoid sun exposure since it works best on dark hairs and light skin tones. Is the same true of electrolysis? I'm considering switching treatment options since summer is around the corner.

With electrolysis, you should avoid sun exposure for 24 hours after treatment. There are otherwise no restrictions.

Here is a simple explanation of how the two procedures work...

The laser used in laser hair removal targets pigment (color). The laser light passes through the skin and is absorbed by the darker hair follicle, resulting in its destruction. With electrolysis, a probe with electrical current is used to destroy the follicle directly, therefore the color of the hair or skin is not relevant. This is why folks with blond/white hair can be treated with electrolysis, but not lasers. If the hair has no pigment, there is nothing for the laser to target.

I'll include a brief public service announcement...
Even small amounts of sun exposure increase your risk of skin cancer, so you should always wear sunblock. Spray tans and bronzing products look very natural and are a much healthier alternative.
